Spotlight: Autodesk’s AI shift, and what Revit 2027 actually adds
Autodesk is moving AEC work toward Forma and Autodesk Assistant. Here is the AI that shipped in Revit 2027, and what BIM teams should try first.
Autodesk is no longer talking about AI as a side panel in one product. The September 2026 message from Amy Bunszel is that commodity chat, trained on the open web, is the wrong tool for the built environment. The company wants project context — site, design intent, schedule, requirements — to live in Forma, and for assistants to work against that context instead of a screenshot.
That is the shift. Revit 2027 is where most BIM teams will feel the first slice of it.
The bigger move: Forma first, Revit connected
Autodesk now describes Forma as the end-to-end industry cloud for AEC. Revit is the first Forma Connected Client. Civil 3D is next. The stated path is not “delete Revit.” It is: start earlier in Forma (site, layout, options), drop into Revit for detailed authoring, and over years move more analysis, coordination and documentation back into the cloud.
Autodesk’s own FAQ is blunter than the marketing slides: over time, more of the work that happens in Revit today will happen in Forma. They also say they will not force a overnight migration, and that Revit remains the leading tool for model-based BIM. BIM managers should plan for both sentences at once. The authoring file is not going away this release. The centre of gravity is moving.
Around that sit the rest of the AU 2026 AI bets: Assistant on a Forma site, Building Layout Explorer for multifamily mixes, drawing search and change analysis in Forma Data Management, construction agents for search and submittals, and a next-generation standalone Assistant previewed for work that does not live in one desktop app. Those are the platform. Revit 2027 is the desk tool catching up.
What Revit 2027 actually adds
Autodesk Assistant (tech preview)
Autodesk Assistant in Revit is the in-product chat. It is meant to answer two kinds of question: how does Revit work, grounded in Autodesk documentation; and what is in this model.
It can also act. Autodesk’s examples are the ones BIM coordinators already type into a to-do list: create a door schedule sorted by level; make a floor plan for L1 and name it. The supported action set is still narrow — model query, export, sheets and views, rooms, schedules, and some element edits. Under the hood it uses MCP, the same protocol Bluebeam just opened in Revu. That is not a coincidence. Assistants that can do something need a tool channel, not just a paragraph.
Treat it as a tech preview. It will not run every Revit command. It will guess. The person who used to make the schedule still checks the schedule.
Public MCP server (tech preview)
Separately, Revit 2027 ships a public MCP server as an add-on. That is the hook for a firm-approved client — Claude, Cursor, or whatever the BIM standard named — to query the open model in natural language.
Autodesk’s first cut is read-heavy: ask questions, run reports, navigate. That is the right place to start. Write-access from an external model is how you get an unofficial family dump at 4 p.m. on a Friday. If you connect it, connect it under the same rule as one LLM for the firm: licensed tenancy, no personal accounts, no pasting the client model into the consumer web app.
Documentation helpers
The other Revit 2027 AI is less chat and more “finish the sheet.” Autodesk describes workflows that autocomplete room elements, optimise annotations, and push documentation across multiple views, with the architect reviewing and accepting. That is closer to the daily pain than a demo prompt. It is also where a sloppy accept will quietly stamp the wrong room name onto twelve sheets.
Already there, still there
Generative Design remains the older Autodesk AI story in Revit: goals, constraints, options. Model Analytics (a cloud add-in for health and use of cloud models) and the Forma connection sit alongside, even when they are not branded as a chatbot. Carbon analysis is on the 2027 product page as part of the same release, not as an LLM.
What a BIM lead should do this quarter
Do not wait for Forma to “replace” Revit before you write a rule. The rule is the same as for Bluebeam MCP. Name the approved assistants. Say whether Autodesk Assistant is in or out for project work. If you enable the public MCP server, say which client may attach and what it may read.
Then run a short pilot on a non-sensitive model: one Assistant schedule, one annotation pass, one MCP query. Keep the human accept step. Measure whether it saved time or created cleanup.
Autodesk is building toward project intelligence in the cloud. Revit 2027 is the first release where that sentence shows up on the modeller’s machine. Use it as a controlled tool. Do not confuse a tech preview with a finished coordinator.
